Salzburg

We begin our city walk at Mozartplatz in front of the Mozart statue. Look at him! Mozart was actually just 1,56m tall, but they made him taller as if he was an emperor. Mozart was also left handed, but in his days people thought being left handed is a sign for being possessed by the devil and therefore they put the pencil in his right hand. Another detail to mention is that there were no pencils yet and he was writing with a feather instead.

The statue was supposed to be erected for the 50th year of Mozart’s death, but when the constructions were started a precious roman mosaic was discovered. You can see a reconstruction of that mosaic on the right side of the statue when standing in front of it. Mozart’s wife Constanze outlived him for 50 years. Because of the delay due to the discovery of the mosaic she has not seen the finished statue anymore.

At Mozartplatz you also find the tourist information in case you need a city map or want to buy the Salzburg Card. Opposite to the tourist information there is the Salzburg museum.
